In 2013 some employees at Amazon asked their-self: what if we could create a new shopping experience without checkouts where people could take anything from the store even without paying physically. With the development of new technologies like computer vision and machine learning it finally arrived in 2017: The Amazon Go grocery store.
The store is now only for Amazon workers but they plan for many stores around the whole world so everybody could shop without passing the cash desk.
The first Amazon Go location is located at 2131 Seventh Avenue in Seattle, The home town of Amazon. It's considered as the most advanced store ever build.
So in the near future it will be possible for everybody to take what he needs from the grocery. No need for cash or credit cards, no need of a cashier. No checkouts means more space for selling products in the shelves. This means more choice of products to pick from and no long queues at the checkout.
How it works
The checkout-free shopping experience is based on the same principles and technologies used in self-driving cars: computer vision, sensor fusion and deep learning. Amazon's 'Walk Out Technology'
automatically detects when products are taken from or returned to the shelves and keeps track of them in a virtual cart. When a costumer is done shopping, he can just leave the store. Shortly after, Amazon will charge it in your Amazon account and send you a receipt. All you need is an Amazon account and the free Amazon Go app installed on your smartphone.
