Molotov cocktail

Vyacheslav Mikhailovich Molotov

A molotov cocktail is usually a glass bottle filled with fuel such as gasoline with a plug or piece of fabric above that serves as a wick. This weapon is very often used by violent demonstrators. We owe this fact to Vyacheslav Mikhailovich Molotov (1890-1986), Russian Foreign Minister between 1939 and 1949. He experienced the short war with Finland between November 1939 and March 1940, very close. Hereby the Russian army dropped bombs on the Finnish capital Helsinki, although Molotov officially told the world that it was about food packages. As revenge, the Finns pelted the Russian tanks with gas bombs, which they called 'molotov cocktails'. This way there is something to drink was added to the Russian food packages. In a Finnish vodka factoryn, 450,000 molotov cocktails were to be produced in the following months, but the Russian army was too strong and the Finns surrendered.
