What is an anemometer (short definition) An Anemometer is an instrument with which the wind can be determined. Wat is een anemometer (korte definitie) Een Anemometer is een instrument waarmee de windsnelheid wordt bepaald. Molentje met halve bollen Dit instrument werd in 1846 geïntroduceerd door de Ierse astronoom Thomas Romney Robinson (1792-1882). Dit instrument is een ronddraaiend molentje met drie of vier halve bollen (cups) die met stangetjes aan een draaibare as zijn bevestigd. De as staat ongeveer haaks op de richting van de te meten wind. De halve bollen, zijn van binnen hol. Indien er maar 3 halve bollen aanwezig zijn staan deze elk op 120° uit elkaar opgesteld. Doordat de wind op de holle zijde meer kracht uitoefent dan op de bolle zijde, zal het molentje gaan draaien. De beweging van de draaiende bollen wordt via de as omgezet met een dynamo in een elektrisch spanningssignaal. Uit de omwentelingssnelheid kan de snelheid van de wind worden afgeleid.
